ISLAMABAD: The federal government’s debt increased by Rs18.832 trillion during the first 28 months of the current government, according to data from the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP).

The latest SBP figures put the federal government’s debt at Rs83.642 trillion by June 2026.

According to the documents, between March 2024 and June 2026, the federal government’s domestic debt increased by Rs16.766 trillion, while its external debt rose by Rs2.066 trillion.

This translates into an average increase of more than Rs22.4 billion per day during the 28-month period.

The documents show that the federal government’s total debt stood at Rs64.810 trillion in February 2024, the final month of the caretaker government. By June 2026, the debt had risen to Rs83.642 trillion.

According to SBP data, the central government’s domestic debt stood at Rs42.675 trillion in February 2024 and increased to Rs59.441 trillion by June 2026.

Similarly, the federal government’s external debt increased from Rs22.134 trillion in February 2024 to Rs24.201 trillion by June 2026.

The latest June 2026 figure is consistent with SBP-linked data showing central government debt at around Rs83.6 trillion, its highest recorded level.
