Pakistani chai lovers consume over $436 million worth of tea in 8 months

The Pakistanis’ love for tea is growing each day as the country imported tea worth $436.677 million during the eight months of the fiscal year, according to the data published by PBS.
As per PBS data, the cash-strapped country imported tea worth $395.489 million in July-February (2022-23).
Tea imports into the country during the period July-February (2023-24) increased by 10.13pc as compared to the imports of the same period of last year.
According to the statistics department, tea imports into the country were recorded at 180,509 tonnes as compared to the imports of 161,056 tonnes in the same period last year.
Despite financial constraints, Pakistan imported 18,685 metric tonnes of tea valued at $45.269 million, on a monthly basis, compared to the consumption of 15,365 metric tonnes costing $32.678 million in the same month of the last year.
The overall food imports into the country decreased by 18.33% during the first eight months of the current fiscal year and were recorded at $6.687 billion against $5.461 billion last year.
