The Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP) is conducting a nationwide search and investigation into toxic ingredients found in the raw material, Propylene Glycol, used in manufacturing cough syrups.
This raw material, imported from Thailand by a local company, was distributed to various pharmaceutical firms across Pakistan.
DRAP has ordered the recall of Delorvin Syrup and the implicated raw material due to the discovery of harmful impurities, Ethylene Glycol and Diethylene Glycol.
The officials are actively investigating to identify the importer responsible for supplying the substandard raw material and to determine which pharmaceutical companies utilized it in their cough syrup production.
However, a pharmaceutical company in Peshawar, MKB, is facing repercussions as its cough syrup is found to contain toxic elements, finding that it contains harmful elements in a significant amount, specifically 25%, prompting DRAP to recall the product nationwide.
The raw materials, imported from Thailand, have been implicated in this substandard product.
Legal actions have been initiated against those involved, and ongoing investigations aim to ensure the safety of pharmaceutical products, holding accountable those responsible for the inclusion of toxic ingredients in the cough syrup.
Propylene Glycol, commonly used in syrup manufacturing, can sometimes be of industrial grade, posing risks for human consumption due to poisonous impurities.
DRAP underscores the crucial need for safety testing of raw materials.
The discovery of the issue came to light when a pharmaceutical company voluntarily reported the problem to DRAP.
