KARACHI: A prolonged dry spell coupled with persistent high humidity has led to a sharp increase in respiratory illnesses across Karachi, with medical experts reporting a 30% surge in asthma and lung-related cases.
According to hospital officials, government medical facilities are receiving over 80 respiratory patients daily, while private hospitals are reporting at least 10 new cases each day, attributed largely to the deteriorating air quality and oppressive weather conditions.
Speaking to Geo News, Dr. Javed Khan, a leading pulmonologist, stated that the city’s humid environment and lack of rainfall are contributing to poor air quality, which exacerbates breathing difficulties—particularly for individuals with pre-existing respiratory conditions.
“Humidity reduces oxygen concentration in the air and increases airway irritation,” said Dr. Khan.
“Patients with asthma or other lung diseases are especially vulnerable under these conditions.”

Dr. Khan strongly advised citizens to wear face masks outdoors, minimize exposure to polluted or humid air, and avoid consuming cold items such as chilled drinks and ice cream, which could trigger allergic reactions.
Healthcare professionals are also urging residents—especially those with asthma, bronchitis, or other respiratory conditions—to stay indoors during peak humidity hours, adhere to their prescribed treatment plans, and monitor symptoms closely.
With no immediate forecast for rain, medical experts warn that cases may continue to rise if preventive measures are not observed.
