Actor Mishi Khan defended YouTuber Rajab Butt against criticism surrounding his extravagant wedding. She argued that Butt has a history of philanthropic giving and has every right to spend his own money as he chooses.
Khan stated that people are criticizing Butt for celebrating his wedding lavishly, suggesting he should have used the funds to arrange weddings for poor families or assist vulnerable individuals.
The Janaan actor countered this criticism, stating that those criticising Butt would likely not contribute to charity themselves.
She highlighted that Rajab Butt has already been helping those in need of financial assistance.
"It's a matter of personal choice," she explained. "In Punjab, it's culturally common to shower money at weddings. I've witnessed lavish wedding celebrations throughout my life in Punjab."
"It's his money," she stated, questioning, "What's wrong with him spending his wealth on his own wedding?"
She criticised the double standard, noting that while people rarely criticise politicians for lavishly spending public funds on their families, a prominent figure like Rajab Butt, one of Pakistan's most-watched YouTubers, faces widespread backlash for celebrating his wedding in a grand manner.
She argued that authorities should focus their attention on those who brought weapons to the wedding and gifted him a lion cub without his consent, rather than solely targeting Rajab Butt.
Khan also expressed concern over the authorities' immediate arrest of Butt after his wedding event for keeping the lion cub, arguing that he was not given adequate time to address the situation.
She emphasised that the gift was unexpected and that Butt might have taken appropriate measures to handle the situation if given the opportunity.
Mishi Khan pointed out that lavish weddings are a cultural norm in Punjab, “where individuals often spend significantly more than Rajab Butt did, yet they remain unnoticed due to their lack of social media presence.”
She argued that society “unfairly holds celebrities, influencers, and actors accountable for societal reform,” while neglecting the primary responsibility of politicians.
Mishi Khan emphasised the need for politicians to lead by example and "curtail their own extravagant lifestyles."
