Punjab at greater threat from other provinces than neighbouring countries: CM Maryam

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz on Saturday said Punjab faced a greater security threat from neighbouring provinces than neighbouring countries.

Speaking at the e-launch of an Artificial Intelligence (AI) Hub in Lahore, she stressed the need for stronger coordination, intelligence sharing and modern technology to tackle terrorism and other security challenges.

Maryam said Punjab was dealing with terrorism, ethnic and religious conflicts, organised crime and drug-related issues. She described Punjab as a safe province, saying billions of rupees had been invested in technology to improve security and make the province more capable of anticipating threats.

The chief minister said the new AI Hub would help authorities combine intelligence, share information in real time and identify emerging security threats before they turned into incidents. She also highlighted the use of thermal cameras, drones, bulletproof cameras and fortified checkposts, particularly in tri-border areas.

She said improved security measures had reduced casualties during attacks and strengthened the protection of security personnel. Maryam also claimed that the Kaccha areas had become largely crime-free with the cooperation of the military and the Sindh and Punjab governments, while claiming an overall 70 per cent reduction in crime in the province.

Maryam also announced a renewed crackdown on corruption within government departments and law enforcement agencies. She said a public helpline had been established for reporting bribery and corruption, while body cameras had been provided to personnel to monitor their conduct and ensure accountability.

The chief minister said the government’s focus was shifting from reacting to incidents to preventing them through technology and timely intelligence. She expressed hope that the AI Hub would improve coordination between provincial, federal and intelligence agencies and help create a more secure environment for citizens.
