The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has recommended an early start to summer vacations for educational institutions in Punjab due to intensifying heat and the risk of heatwaves.
The recommendation was made in a letter issued by PDMA Director General Irfan Ali Kathia, which was sent to the School Education and Higher Education Departments, as well as divisional commissioners and deputy commissioners.
The letter urges authorities to take precautionary measures, including adjusting school timings and potentially announcing summer breaks earlier if temperatures continue to rise.
The PDMA has also emphasized the importance of ensuring uninterrupted access to clean drinking water in schools and colleges, prohibiting outdoor activities during peak heat, and encouraging students to wear light, loose-fitting clothing.
In addition to these measures, the PDMA has called for improved classroom ventilation, the proper functioning of fans and cooling systems, and the establishment of first-aid counters with staff trained in handling heat-related emergencies.
The letter further emphasises the need for coordination with district disaster management authorities to ensure the timely flow of information regarding heat-related risks.
The heatwave is already affecting Punjab, with dry weather conditions leading to steadily rising temperatures.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department reports that Lahore’s minimum temperature has reached 23°C, with the maximum expected to rise to 40°C in the coming days.
Authorities have also noted that nighttime temperatures are increasing, a trend being observed across several districts in the province
