An Indian fisherman took his own life by hanging himself in Karachi’s Malir Jail. The deceased had been imprisoned since February 2022.

Malir Jail Superintendent Arshad Husain said that the fisherman, identified as Gaurav Ram Anand, 52, hanged himself with a robe in the bathroom of the prison barracks.

“In the barracks, where all the Indian prisoners are confined,” Husain said. “He [the fisherman] went to the washroom on Tuesday night and ended his life by hanging himself.”

Following the prisoner's death, the duty doctor examined the prisoner and confirmed his death at 2:20 am.

Subsequently, a magistrate conducted an inquest and instructed that the body be stored at the Edhi Foundation’s mortuary facility in Sohrab Goth, until legal formalities were completed.

The deceased was arrested by Docks police in February 2022  for illegally entering Pakistan’s territorial waters while fishing, he had been shifted to Malir Jail by the West Karachi magistrate.

The reason behind his suicide remains unknown.

Separately, 22 Indian fishermen who were imprisoned in Malir jail for unintentionally crossing into Pakistan's territorial waters were released and handed over to Indian authorities at the Wagah Border last month after completing their sentences.
