The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has announced plans to introduce an electric tram service in Islamabad, aiming to modernize the city’s public transport system and promote eco-friendly mobility.
CDA Chairman Mohammad Ali Randhawa confirmed the initiative after a meeting with officials from the National Radio Telecommunication Corporation (NRTC) on Thursday.
He stated that a feasibility study for the tram system has been approved in accordance with directives from the Prime Minister and the Interior Minister.
“Electric buses are already operational. Now we are moving toward electric trams,” said Randhawa. “A feasibility study will help us take the next step.”
According to a press release, discussions also covered the deployment of Soft Wheel Electric Trams and strengthening the existing electric feeder bus network. Randhawa directed relevant departments to complete the study swiftly so that the tram service can be launched on the city’s busiest routes.
Sources indicated that a Chinese consultancy firm may be engaged to carry out the feasibility assessment. Initial plans include four potential routes, notably one from Rawat to Faisal Mosque via the Expressway and another from Jinnah Square to Islamabad International Airport via Srinagar Highway.
