A jeweller in Saddar, Karachi admitted to fabricating a robbery scene of his own shop to gain relief from loan payments.
According to police, a call was recieved from shop owner Mehroz Ali, reporting that two-armed men entered his jewellery store on Raja Ghazanfar Ali Road and robbed valuables worth around Rs 40 lakh before fleeing on a motorcycle.
When officers reached the shop, they found the owner drinking tea, and nearby residents said they were unaware any crime had occurred.
The absence of chaos and any immediate evidence raised suspicions amongst the police.
Police, however, collected footage from nearby CCTV cameras and questioned neighboring shop staff, but found no evidence of the complaint made.
Furthermore, significant amount of jewellery was seen in the store display counter, contradicting the owner’s reported losses.
Upon further investigation by police, Mehroz confessed that he had fabricated the story to delay repayment of his debts. His statement has been officially recorded and included in the investigation file.
Mehroz was later released upon trade unions appeal, however, police warned the traders that false crime reports would lead to strict legal action if repeated in the future.
