Deputy Commissioner (DC) South, Javed Nabi Khosa, has stated that the massive fire at Gul Plaza cannot simply be attributed to an electrical short circuit and that a thorough investigation into the incident will be conducted.
Speaking to the media outside the site, he said that inquiries are ongoing to determine whether the fire was caused by a short circuit or some other factor, and that responsible individuals will face legal action.
“This is a major tragedy, and we aim to carry out a fully transparent investigation,” he added.
Khosa noted that witness statements are being collected regarding why certain doors were closed during the fire, and all aspects of the incident are under scrutiny. “Which doors were closed and which were open is also being investigated.
Anyone found negligent will be held accountable,” he said, urging the public not to rely on unverified social media reports. Updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
He confirmed that the death toll has risen to 30, with concerns of further casualties, while approximately 55–60 bodies or human remains have been recovered.
Most have undergone DNA sampling, with only a few posing challenges.
DC South explained that searches have been completed in intact sections of the building, while debris-laden areas are still being cleared.
Machinery is being used cautiously to ensure the safety of rescue workers, as 40% of the building has already collapsed.
He emphasised: “Please do not believe rumours circulating on social media. The investigation is ongoing, and nearly 80 lives have been lost in this tragic incident.”
