Citizens of Karachi breathed a sigh of relief as sea breezes resumed in the metropolis yesterday, bringing some respite from the intense heat that had been plaguing the city for several days.
The night between Sunday and Monday was the hottest in the month of July in the last 6 decades, with a minimum temperature of 32 degrees Celsius and 70 percent humidity in the air, according to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD).
Chief Meteorologist Dr Sardar Sarfraz termed it the "warmest night" since 1960, when the department began digitising meteorological records.
A day earlier, the temperature in Karachi was recorded at 38.1 degrees Celsius, 4.5 degrees higher than the monthly average for July.
Experts noted that the recent heat wave, which lasted from June 23 to June 30, was the hottest in Karachi since the 2015 heatwave that killed over 1,200 people and sickened hundreds.
The weatherman said the extreme heat had hit the metropolis due to low air pressure in Indian Gujarat.
The restoration of sea breezes is expected to improve the temperature in the port city in the coming days, he added.
However, Sarfraz predicted that the weather will remain hot and humid, with no chance of rain till July 8.
