Pakistan and Iran have agreed to maintain 24/7 operations at their shared border during the upcoming Islamic observances of Muharram and Arbaeen to facilitate the movement of pilgrims, officials said Wednesday.
The decision was announced following a meeting between Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and Iranian Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni. Both sides also discussed regional cooperation and measures to improve pilgrim welfare.
According to a joint statement, the two countries are working on enhancing travel arrangements, including increasing flights and exploring sea routes for pilgrims heading to Iran and Iraq. Iran has committed to providing food and accommodation for 5,000 Pakistani pilgrims in Mashhad and supporting their onward journey to Iraq.
To improve coordination, a dedicated hotline will be established to address any issues faced by pilgrims in real time. Additionally, a trilateral conference involving Pakistan, Iran, and Iraq will be held in Mashhad before Arbaeen to streamline arrangements.
The ministers also reviewed progress on sea travel options, aiming to ease the burden on land and air routes during peak seasons. Broader issues discussed included border security, countering illegal immigration, and anti-narcotics efforts.
Iran also raised concerns about Iranian fishermen detained in Pakistani waters. In response, Pakistan pledged cooperation for their early release.
Minister Naqvi thanked Iran for its continued hospitality toward Pakistani pilgrims, noting that strengthened coordination would help ensure safer and more efficient travel during the religious period.
