Pakistan has climbed 14 places in the United Nations (UN) E-government Development Index (EGDI) for 2024 after the advancement in technology and digitalisation of public departments.

Pakistan’s EGDI index value rose to 0.5095 from 0.42380 in 2022, while the index value was 0.41830 in 2018.

The new ranking showed that the under-developing country reached rank 136 from 150.

“We are one of two countries in Asia that have moved from the middle tier of digital e-governance to the high tier. It is a significant achievement,” Radio Pakistan quoted Minister of State for Information Technology Shaza Fatima Khawaja as saying.

She emphasised the need for collective efforts to foster innovation among the youth.

In the South Asian region, Pakistan ranked second lowest, while India, with 0.6678, Sri Lanka with 0.6667, Nepal with 0.5781, and Bhutan and Maldives with 0.6511 and 0.6745 points, standing at the top order.

Meanwhile, Afghanistan is followed by Pakistan with 0.2083 points.

On the other hand, Asian countries are behind European Denmark (0.9847) and regional frontrunners like Singapore (0.969).

However, Saudi Arabia has achieved significant growth and climbed to 25 places to become one of the leading countries in the global rankings.

The Kingdom ranked first in the region, second in the G20 countries and fourth globally on the digital index.

The UN report is based on the survey findings and noted the maturity of digitalisation in public offices.
