Pakistani fighter jets launched airstrikes on four locations, reportedly camps of the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), in Afghanistan’s eastern Paktika province on Tuesday night.
The strikes, according to security officials, resulted in several suspected terrorists being killed or injured.
The TTP camps targeted in the attack were located in the Murgha and Laman areas of Bernal district. One of the camps was reportedly used by key TTP figures, including Sher Zaman alias Mukhlis Yar, Commander Abu Hamza, Commander Akhtar Muhammad, and Umar Media, head of the group’s media operations.
The Afghan Defence Ministry, in a statement on the social media platform X, confirmed the airstrikes carried out by Pakistani forces.
However, the ministry claimed that the casualties included a number of children and civilians, alongside the reported deaths and injuries of suspected militants.
Details surrounding the full extent of the damage or the number of casualties remain unclear as of the time of reporting.
The airstrikes occurred on the same day that a Pakistani delegation, led by Special Representative Ambassador Muhammad Sadiq, met with Afghan officials in Kabul.
The delegation held talks with Interim Interior Minister Sirajuddin Haqqani and Foreign Minister Amir Muttaqi, aiming to resume diplomatic discussions after a year-long hiatus between the two countries.
