The Punjab government has decided to shift all 43 prisons in the province to solar energy.

The Home Department has finalized the plan and submitted it for approval to Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz.

According to the department’s spokesperson, an initial survey of all prisons has been completed, including a cost estimate for the transition to solar power.

Currently, the annual electricity and gas bills for Punjab’s prisons amount to approximately PKR 4.5 billion.

The proposed transition to solar energy is expected to cost PKR 4.35 billion.

The spokesperson further stated that the phased implementation of this green energy initiative would lead to a 60% reduction in electricity expenses.

It has been recommended that PKR 2 billion be allocated for the project in the current financial year.
