In an attempt to enhance facilities in public transport service, Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah-led Sindh government has announced launching Pakistan's first electric taxis in the province.

Sindh Minister for Information, Excise, Narcotics and Transport Sharjeel Inam Memon took to X (formally Twitter) to share the good news with public.

“Pakistan’s first EV taxis and Pink EV taxis will be started soon by Transport Department Government of Sindh,” he wrote in a post.

However, the date of launching electric taxis was not mentioned in the post.

The introduction of electric vehicles also falls in line with international standards and helps to turn the transport system into an eco-friendly service.

The plan to provide ease to passengers was revealed on May 25, in a Sindh cabinet meeting, aimed to operate 200 electric taxis in Karachi, of which 50 pink taxis were specifically reserved for women passengers.

In a meeting, Memon said the initiatives aimed to provide public transportation and dedicated service for female passengers.

Moreover, the cabinet had also allocated Rs25 billion for the transport project.

According to the authorities, female drivers will be recruited specifically for the pink taxis.

"These measures not only prioritise women's safety but also promote sustainable transportation and yield economic advantages for all stakeholders involved,” he said.
