In a significant move to public safety from incidents, the Sindh government has decided to stop the storage and sale of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders in densely populated areas.

The Home Department wrote to all deputy commissioners of Sindh, directing them to comply with the order to prevent horrific incidents of cylinder blasts.

The decision came after the Hyderabad incident, which claimed 27 lives and left several people seriously injured when a cylinder blasted in a shop located in Pertabad, a residential area.

The department's letter directed the deputy commissioners to conduct a comprehensive survey and verify the necessary certificates, licenses, and permits to sell the gas and cylinder.

DCs were asked for regular inspections in their respective jurisdictions and to take action against those who were storing or selling LNG and LPG cylinders.

They were also asked to ensure compliance with safety standards and regulations as per the Sindh Civil Defence Act, 1951.

It ordered that the cylinders not be stored and sold in densely populated residential areas or near schools, hospitals, or other vulnerable locations.

“Enforce safe storage practices, including appropriate distance from buildings, proper ventilation, and adherence to capacity limits,” it added.

Moreover, the Home Ministry directed the DCs to “seize and confiscate LNG and LPG cylinders from unauthorised sellers and notice sellers found operating without the necessary permit or in violation of safety regulations.”

According to directives, all DCs will be restricted to submitting weekly reports of inspections to the Home Department. The government also warned of strict action against officials and those who would be found involved in violations of rules.
