A 13-year-old student lost her life due to extreme heat at a government school in Haroonabad, Bahawalnagar on Tuesday. 

The incident was reported amid soaring temperature in the country, raising serious concerns about the impact of the ongoing heatwave on students.

According to a spokesperson for the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), the deceased was an eighth-grade student who fell ill during school hours. Her condition reportedly worsened due to the high temperature and humidity inside the classroom. 

The spokesperson confirmed that the girl had a pre-existing heart condition and suffered a heart attack brought on by the heat.

Despite being provided immediate medical attention and rushed to a nearby hospital, the student could not survived and was pronounced dead shortly after medical checkup.

Amidst intense heat wave situation, the Punjab's education minister, Rana Sikandar Hayat has announced the summer vacation for all schools across the province from May 28. 

Hayat also revised school timings due to the rising temperatures. The new school timings will be observed from 7:30am to 11:30am effective from May 21 (tomorrow) until the start of the summer vacations.

Ealier, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) issued an advisory warning of another heatwave expected to grip various parts of the country from May 20 to May 24. The latest alert follows a similar advisory issued on May 15, indicating a continuing trend of rising temperatures across the region.

According to the PMD, high pressure in the upper atmosphere is likely to persist throughout the ongoing week, contributing to a significant rise in daytime temperatures. The department forecasts that temperatures may soar 4 to 7°C above normal in several regions.
