Excessive use of artificial intelligence (AI) technology may increase the risk of developing common mental health problems, according to new research.
A study published in the journal JAMA Network Open examined the relationship between AI usage and mental health.
The research analysed data collected through questionnaires completed by 21,000 participants from all 50 US states.
The findings revealed that frequent use of AI is associated with a higher likelihood of experiencing symptoms of depression, anxiety and irritability.
Although the widespread use of AI has emerged only in recent years, it has already become a part of daily life for many people.
Participants in the study were asked how often they used AI technology, including how frequently and for how long they interacted with AI chatbots on a daily, weekly or monthly basis.
Alongside this information, researchers also reviewed personal data such as income levels and educational background.
The study found that individuals who used AI more frequently were at greater risk of depression, with the likelihood increasing by up to 30 per cent.
The impact was found to be similar among men and women, while the risk appeared to be higher among individuals aged between 25 and 64.
However, the study did not identify the specific reasons why increased AI use may have a negative effect on mental health.
