Huawei has overtaken Apple in total shipments of wrist-worn devices, including both smartwatches and fitness bands, during the first nine months of 2024, according to a recent report from IDC.
This marks a significant shift in the wearable tech market, with Huawei now leading the global shipment rankings.
While Apple remains the leader in the global smartwatch category, competition is intensifying. The launch of the Apple Watch Series 10 provided a temporary sales boost in the third quarter, but rivals like Huawei, Xiaomi, and Samsung are making strong gains, signaling a more competitive future for the smartwatch industry.
China has played a key role in reshaping the global smartwatch market. While global shipments of wrist-worn devices showed a slight decline in 2024, China experienced a 20% increase in shipments, driven by growing consumer interest in smartwatches and fitness bands for health tracking and their sleek designs.
Huawei’s rise is attributed to its strategic focus on innovation and market expansion. The company's GT5 and GT5 Pro smartwatches have been particularly well-received for their advanced health-monitoring features, aligning with the rising demand for wellness technology.
Additionally, Huawei has expanded its presence in markets such as Asia-Pacific, Latin America, and the Middle East, tailoring its products to suit local consumer preferences.
Rising competition from other brands
Huawei is not the only company challenging Apple's dominance. Xiaomi and Samsung have also gained traction in the market. Xiaomi’s Band 9 and Watch S series offer attractive features at budget-friendly prices, appealing to a broad consumer base. Meanwhile, Samsung is strengthening its smartwatch lineup, catering to both premium and budget-conscious consumers, positioning itself as a solid competitor to Apple.
What’s next for Apple?
As the smartwatch market evolves, with a growing emphasis on health tracking and personal style, Huawei’s success highlights the importance of continuous innovation and understanding customer needs.
Although Apple remains a leader in the global smartwatch market, Huawei’s rise underscores the need for Apple to stay ahead by offering new and exciting features to retain its position.
The smartwatch industry is becoming increasingly competitive, and the race for market dominance is far from over. To maintain its lead, Apple will need to deliver fresh ideas and keep pace with the changing demands of today’s tech-savvy consumers.
