ISLAMABAD: Secretary Information Technology has admitted that the fault in the international internet cable has not yet been fully rectified.
During a meeting of the National Assembly Standing Committee on Information Technology and Telecommunications, the Secretary IT informed members that the issue persists, though the consortium responsible is working to restore full connectivity, while Pakistan’s internet traffic has been rerouted through alternative channels to minimize disruption.
The committee also expressed concern over poor mobile signal coverage across the country and summoned PTA officials to the next meeting for an explanation.
A detailed briefing was given on the Islamabad IT Park project, where the Project Director reported 80% completion of construction.
Federal Minister for IT Shaza Fatima Khawaja stated that the project is being carried out in collaboration with a Korean company, but delays prompted the Prime Minister to order an inquiry.
She further said that the shortage of spectrum and ongoing legal disputes are causing network issues.
Pakistan currently operates on 274 MHz of spectrum, which is insufficient, and the government is planning to conduct a new spectrum auction by December or January to enhance telecom capacity.
