The Portuguese Parliament has passed a significant bill for the first time, setting strict regulations on children’s use of social media.

According to the bill, children aged 13 to 16 will only be able to access social media platforms with explicit parental consent.

Access to social media, video and photo-sharing platforms, and online betting sites has already been prohibited for children under 13, and enforcement of these restrictions will now be more stringent.

Parents will use Portugal’s Digital Mobile Key (DMK) system to grant permission, while social media companies are required to implement effective age verification systems.

Failure to comply could result in fines.

The bill was approved with 148 votes in favour and 69 against, with 13 members abstaining. Amendments may still be made before the legislation is finalised.
