Chairman Pakistan Telecommunication Authority, Major General (retd) Hafeezur Rehman, has clarified that the PTA will unblock social media platform X (formerly Twitter) as soon as the government directs them to do so.
Speaking in Islamabad on Tuesday, Rehman explained, "If the government or the Ministry of Interior orders us to block X, we are obligated to comply without questioning the directive. The platform will be reopened as soon as the government decides."
Rehman further emphasized that internet restrictions are not exclusive to Pakistan and cited examples from other countries in Asia. He pointed out, "In 2022, India imposed 24 internet shutdowns, while Pakistan did it only once.
In 2023, India enforced 116 shutdowns. Even France suspended the internet for several days following recent incidents. During Bangladesh's last elections, the internet was also cut off.
While we don't support such actions, every nation has its own security concerns, and the government must act accordingly. National security is a priority."
Addressing the ongoing internet restrictions in Panjgur, Balochistan, Rehman said, "When I was asked about the Panjgur shutdown, I responded that it's a matter for the relevant corps commander or the Ministry of Interior. We will lift the restrictions when the government instructs us to do so, as decisions related to national security fall under their purview."
He also highlighted PTA’s strong complaint mechanism, stating, "We handle complaints daily. When there are violations on social media, we assess them under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) and other regulations. Social media platforms cooperate with us extensively, and we have a 93% compliance rate."
