Karachi bride brutally killed over dowry demands, family seeks justice

KARACHI: The death of an 18-year-old woman from Surjani Town, Karachi, has raised serious concerns over domestic violence and dowry-related abuse, with her family alleging that she endured weeks of severe physical torture at the hands of her husband before succumbing to her injuries.

The victim’s family told Dialogue Pakistan that the young woman had married by choice shortly before Ramadan. However, they claim that soon after the marriage, her husband began demanding cash and dowry, allegedly asking for 125 bike or household goods worth approximately Rs300,000.

The victim’s mother, a widow, said the family was unable to meet the demands due to financial constraints.

She alleged that the accused repeatedly harassed and threatened family members, warning them of dire consequences if his demands were not fulfilled.

Family members further claimed that the victim was subjected to continuous physical abuse during her marriage. According to her brother, she secretly contacted him through messages, pleading for help and describing the violence she was facing.

The family alleges that she was beaten repeatedly and suffered serious injuries.

The brother said the victim eventually managed to leave her husband’s home and was assisted by local residents before returning to her family. Upon her arrival, relatives were reportedly shocked by her condition, alleging that she had visible injuries across her body and signs of severe physical trauma.

According to the family, the young woman remained at her mother’s house for three days, during which she was unable to eat due to the extent of her injuries.

They claim she survived on water and small amounts of juice while continuing to receive threatening phone calls from her husband.

The victim later passed away at her family home. Her relatives maintain that her death was the result of prolonged abuse and have called for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the case.

The family also expressed frustration over what they described as a lack of effective intervention while the victim was alive. They have urged law enforcement authorities to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.

An investigation is expected to determine the exact circumstances of the woman’s death and establish any criminal liability.
