Karachi police arrest ATM fraudster from Shah Latif Town

Karachi’s Shah Latif area police arrested a suspect, Zahid Ali, involved in robbing citizens through ATM card fraud.
The arrest was made during an operation conducted on the basis of intelligence reports in the area.
During initial interrogation, the suspect confessed that he would approach people facing difficulty in withdrawing cash from ATMs and offer to help.
Once inside the booth, he would secretly swap their real ATM card with a fake one.
According to the suspect, after observing the PIN code, he would pretend that the machine was not dispensing cash. Once the victim left, he used the original ATM card and PIN to withdraw money.
The suspect also admitted to swapping ATM cards of women registered under the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) and withdrawing their funds.
In just 11 months of 2025, Karachi recorded over 60,700 crimes, in which, 80 people died while resisting robberies, according to CPLC report.
The Citizen Police Liaison Committee (CPLC) report stated that thieves in Karachi stole 35,749 motorcycles, and another 6,078 were snatched at gunpoint.
As many as 16,278 people lost their phones to street crime.
