Traffic accidents in Karachi have declined by 30 per cent during the first six months of the current year compared with the same period last year, according to the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Traffic Karachi, Pir Muhammad Shah.

Speaking at an event organised by the Korangi Association of Trade and Industry, the DIG said that road blockages on the city’s main arteries due to protests would not be tolerated under any circumstances.

He added that the e-challan system introduced last year had gained public acceptance, with around 70 per cent of citizens responding positively to the initiative.

Pir Muhammad Shah said that the introduction of the e-challan system, along with modern surveillance mechanisms, had significantly improved compliance with traffic laws, resulting in a notable reduction in road accidents.

He informed participants that 1,300 surveillance cameras are currently operational across the city, while an additional 2,250 cameras will be installed in the next phase to further strengthen monitoring.

The DIG Traffic made it clear that underage driving would not be allowed under any circumstances, adding that a zero-tolerance policy is being strictly enforced in this regard.

He also noted that a fine of Rs2,500 has been set for various motorcycle traffic violations following legislative approval by the government.

According to Pir Muhammad Shah, 34 locations in the city have been identified as traffic congestion hotspots.

He said the Traffic Flow Unit takes immediate action against illegal parking, issuing challans to ensure smooth traffic flow.

He further stated that continued efforts involving modern technology, the e-challan system, and an expanding camera network would further improve traffic discipline across Karachi.
