KARACHI: Political activists and citizens gathered on Karachi's Shahrah-e-Quaideen to protest against rising inflation, increasing utility costs, and the growing financial burden on households across the country.
Organized by the Pakistan Markazi Muslim League, the demonstration drew a sizeable crowd, with participants expressing frustration over the rising prices of essential commodities, fuel, electricity, gas, transportation, healthcare, and education.
Speaking to Dialogue Pakistan, several protesters said the cost of living had reached an unsustainable level, making it increasingly difficult for ordinary families to meet their daily expenses. Participants argued that inflation had severely impacted household budgets, leaving many struggling to afford basic necessities.
Demonstrators highlighted the sharp increase in utility bills and fuel prices, claiming that higher petroleum levies and taxes have added to the financial pressure on citizens.
They also criticized what they described as the government's reliance on indirect taxation, arguing that the burden continues to fall disproportionately on middle- and lower-income groups.
Several speakers questioned the government's economic policies and expressed concern over the influence of conditions attached to international financial assistance programs.
They called on policymakers to prioritize public welfare and introduce measures aimed at reducing inflation and providing relief to consumers.
Protesters also criticized government spending and demanded greater fiscal discipline, arguing that public resources should be directed toward addressing economic hardships rather than increasing official expenditures and privileges.
Addressing the gathering, participants urged authorities to take immediate steps to stabilize prices, lower utility costs, and improve economic conditions. They warned that continued inflation and rising living expenses could further deepen public frustration if effective relief measures are not introduced.
The demonstration concluded with calls for the government to implement policies that ease the burden on citizens and improve the overall standard of living for struggling families.
