Traffic police in Pakistan's southern port city collect over Rs10 million (Rs1 crore) in challans from more than 10,000 violators in the provincial capital on an average per day, a private news channel revealed on Monday.
According to Geo News, there are 90 traffic sections in Karachi with each section officer being given a task to fine more than 25 violators daily.
Karachiites said that police constables forced them to give bribes by issuing them threats of heavy challans.
As per citizens, traffic cops also issue 'fake challan slips' to the violators if they give bribes to the law enforcers.
On the other hand, DIG traffic police Iqbal Dara said the hike in traffic challans was witnessed due to the increase in violations.
He added that the citizens use illegal ways, including one-way and wrong-way violations, while driving their vehicles, resulting in record collections.
Dara said that the majority of bike and car owners travel on the roads without a driving license.
However, the rise in challans could not control the traffic issues of the metropolis, which according to Dara, is only possible by improving the infrastructure of the economic hub.
