LAHORE: The Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda) stated on Monday that the generation of hydel power exceeded 6,000 megawatts on Sunday night owing to higher water releases from the reservoirs by the Indus River System Authority (Irsa).

“With increased indent by Irsa, Wapda’s hydel power stations provided 6,118MW to national grid during peak hours,” the authority stated.

Providing a detailed figure, it informed that Tarbela Hydel Power Station produced 2,332MW, Tarbela 4th Extension Hydropower Project 1,095MW, Ghazi Barotha 1,160MW, Mangla 930MW, Warsak 135MW and Chashma 101MW.

The remaining 365MW was produced by Wapda’s other medium and small hydel power stations, it further stated.

As per Wapda, in 2025, the total production by its 22 hydel power stations was 33.12 billion units of electricity, which it stated accounted for around 30 per cent of total electricity generation in the system.

In 2023-24 fiscal year, Wapda’s power stations collectively generated 34.436 billion units of electricity for the national grid, which was 3.266bn units higher than the previous fiscal.

According to the Ministry of Water Resources, the total hydel generation capacity of Wapda’ s hydropower projects is 9,459MW.
