Former cricketer Shoaib Akhtar has proposed the creation of a new Pakistan Super League (PSL) franchise representing Rawalpindi, suggesting the name “Pindi Express” — a reference to his popular nickname during his playing career.

Speaking during a television appearance, Akhtar called on the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to consider Rawalpindi in its future expansion plans, as discussions continue around increasing the number of PSL teams from six to eight.

Akhtar highlighted Rawalpindi’s strong cricketing culture and its contribution to Pakistan’s pace bowling legacy, referencing cricketers such as Mohammad Wasim and Haris Rauf in addition to himself.

He noted that the city’s cricket stadium has consistently hosted high-profile PSL matches with strong fan turnout, but remains without a dedicated franchise.

The proposed name “Pindi Express” blends regional identity with Akhtar’s personal brand, and has already sparked interest on social media. Akhtar’s comments are expected to generate public support for Rawalpindi’s inclusion in future PSL editions.

While Rawalpindi is seen as a strong candidate, other cities including Faisalabad and Sialkot are also under consideration.
