Mayor of Sukkur, Barrister Arsalan Islam Shaikh announced on Friday that the star Pakistani athlete, Arshad Nadeem, would be honored with a gold crown, fulfilling the wishes of the people of Sukkur.
He further stated that a new sports stadium currently under development in Sukkur will be named after the 27-year-old javelin thrower, in recognition of his remarkable achievement.
Arshad Nadeem made history last night by becoming Pakistan's first-ever individual athlete to win an Olympic gold medal.
In a video statement, Shaikh extended an invitation to Nadeem to visit Sukkur, where he will be presented with the gold crown upon his arrival.
Shaikh highlighted the national pride that Nadeem's record-breaking accomplishment has brought to Pakistan, noting that every citizen is celebrating this historic moment.
Praising the athlete, the mayor said, "He has given a beautiful gift to Pakistan."
Nadeem's extraordinary 92.97-meter throw has placed him sixth on the list of all-time best javelin throws. The world record is held by Jan Zelezny of the Czech Republic, who achieved a 98.48-meter throw in 1996.
The best Olympic throw, however, was 90.57 meters, set by Norway’s Andreas Thorkildsen during the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
