American actor Andrew Garfield, best known for his role as Spider-Man, received widespread praise on social media for bringing attention to the plight of Palestinians during an event at the New York cultural center, 92NY, which has previously been criticised for silencing voices critical of Israel.
During the interview, the host asked, “What can 500 people collectively clap our hands and make happen for you?”
Andrew Garfield responded that he does not want anything for himself, as he is content with life, but stated, "We should be putting our energy towards something that actually matters."
The host chimed in, "What could be more important than that right now?"
He replied, "Yeah, maybe the lives of, I don’t know, Palestinians in Gaza right now. Maybe that’s where we should put our hearts and our energy. And to anyone suffering, anyone oppressed, anyone that is suffering under the weight of the horrors of our world right now."
We Live in Time actor continued, “Anyone, who doesn’t have a choice in, you know, living lives of dignity. That’s where our energy should be going right now.”
Garfield's comments were made during a podcast with Josh Horowitz at 92NY, a Jewish-founded cultural center in New York.
The center has a history of censoring pro-Palestinian voices, including cancelling events of speakers who support Palestinian causes.
In October 2023, the organisation cancelled an interview with Pulitzer Prize-winning author Viet Thanh Nguyen, who had signed an open letter alongside 750 global figures condemning Israel’s war crimes in Gaza.
According to AJ+, 92NY employees have faced restrictions on expressing solidarity with Palestine, even in subtle ways, such as wearing watermelon-themed badges.
Netizens commended Garfield for using a pro-Israel platform to speak out against Israeli war crimes and highlight the suffering of Palestinians.
Many emphasised the importance of artists using their influence to address global injustices.
Although Garfield is not active on social media, fans praised him for using his public appearance to advocate for the Palestinian cause, unlike others who remain silent despite having large online followings.
Andrew Garfield, who doesn't own a single public social media account, has now been more vocal about Palestine than 90% of your faves (and mine) https://t.co/XtpPqR1XmI

Remember when 92NY cancelled Viet Thanh Nguyen's event because he was loud about Palestine? Andrew Garfield just said this at the same place. KING. https://t.co/87KHV0OOPa

As Israel commits some of the most depraved atrocities of our age, so few public figures have spoken out.

So kudos and love to Andrew Garfield for using his platform to stand by the Palestinian people in their darkest hour. https://t.co/tJJ2zhdo3W
Keep in mind, Andrew Garfield is Jewish yet still supports Palestine showing that supporting Palestine doesnโt mean you are antisemitic https://t.co/Gv2YBz0wFi
