Amid escalating tensions between India and Pakistan following a deadly attack in India-occupied Kashmir, former US President Donald Trump expressed optimism that both countries would “figure out” their differences.
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump described the situation as one rooted in centuries of historical conflict, adding that both nations have always had “great tension” but would eventually “get it figured out.”
The violence in Pahalgam, a popular tourist destination in occupied Kashmir, claimed the lives of at least 26 people and injured 17 others. Most of the victims were Indian men, with one victim from Nepal.
The incident has triggered tit-for-tat diplomatic actions between the two nuclear-armed neighbours and renewed international concern over regional stability.
Responding to the developments, US State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce said Washington was “closely monitoring” the situation, reiterating that the US does not take a position on the status of Kashmir.
Meanwhile, United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres called for “maximum restraint” from both countries. His spokesperson, Stephane Dujarric, urged meaningful engagement and peaceful resolution, including over India’s suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty.
Despite these appeals, cross-border firing was reported overnight along the Line of Control.
