US President Donald Trump has claimed that relations between Saudi Arabia and Israel have significantly improved behind the scenes and suggested that Riyadh will soon join the Abraham Accords.
According to international news agencies, Trump made the remarks during a joint press conference in Florida with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
He further stated that the Abraham Accords are likely to expand at a relatively fast pace, and Saudi Arabia’s participation is only a matter of time.
Trump emphasised that, in his view, Saudi Arabia has fulfilled all the expectations and is managing its relations with Israel very effectively.
However, despite Trump’s assertions, Saudi Arabia has consistently maintained a cautious, and at times explicitly negative, position regarding the establishment of formal diplomatic ties with Israel.
Recently, former Saudi intelligence chief Prince Turki al-Faisal told Israeli media in an interview that diplomatic relations cannot normalise until Israel adopts the behaviour of a normal state and recognises Palestine as an independent and sovereign nation.
Historically, Saudi Arabia has linked the normalisation of relations with Israel to the establishment of a free and independent Palestinian state.
Nevertheless, analysts note that unofficial cooperation between Saudi Arabia and Israel exists in areas such as security, intelligence, and regional affairs, particularly in the context of countering Iran’s influence.
