Trump recalls last call with Lindsey Graham before his death

President Donald Trump said he spoke with Sen. Lindsey Graham on Saturday evening, just hours before the senator’s reported death, describing their final conversation as both personal and focused on legislative priorities.

In an interview on NBC News’ Meet the Press, Trump said Graham appeared tired but otherwise seemed well. Reflecting on the senator’s passing, the president said he believed it was a peaceful and sudden end.

Trump described Graham as more than a political ally, calling him “like a member of the family.” The two maintained a close relationship, frequently speaking by phone and spending time together on the golf course. Graham had recently returned from a trip to Ukraine before his reported death.

According to Trump, Graham called to discuss the SAVE America Act, legislation aimed at reshaping U.S. election procedures but currently lacking sufficient Senate support. Trump recalled encouraging Graham, telling him they would get the bill passed and expecting to see him the following day.

Speaking separately on CNN’s State of the Union, Trump said Graham also shared details about his recent visit to Ukraine, describing the trip as successful.

Remembering Graham’s political career, Trump praised his ability to work across party lines, particularly in resolving disagreements with Democrats. He described the senator as a skilled and dedicated politician who genuinely enjoyed public service.

Trump also noted Graham’s determination, saying he could be exceptionally tough when fighting for issues he believed in, while emphasizing that he was ultimately “a good person.”

Graham had been scheduled to appear on Meet the Press on Sunday to discuss his recent visit to Ukraine. Throughout his career, he was widely recognized as one of the Republican Party’s leading voices on foreign policy.
