US President Donald Trump on Monday announced that the United States was reinstating a naval blockade on Iran and said Washington would seek reimbursement equal to 20% of all cargo shipped through the Strait of Hormuz after Tehran claimed it had closed the strategic waterway.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said: "The Hormuz Strait is OPEN, and will remain OPEN, with or without Iran. We are reinstating THE IRANIAN BLOCKADE."
He added that the "U.S.A... will be reimbursed, at the rate of 20% on all cargo shipped" to cover the costs of ensuring security in what he described as a volatile region, but did not explain how the measure would be implemented.
Speaking earlier on Fox News' Fox & Friends, Trump said the United States would likely take control of security in the strait.
"We're going to keep the strait, and we'll probably run it. We'll become the guardian of the strait," he said, adding that other wealthy nations benefiting from the route should bear the cost.
Iran announced the closure of the Strait of Hormuz on Saturday following what it described as an unauthorised transit and said on Sunday that shipping would remain suspended until "stability and calm" were restored.
Iran's Revolutionary Guards said regular shipping would resume only if US military operations in the waterway ended, warning that continued intervention could lead to wider disruption in the global oil and gas sector.
