The United Arab Emirates has introduced strict new regulations on food and beverages aimed at improving children’s health and overall development.

According to an international news agency, the UAE has banned the sale and carrying of dozens of food items, including junk food.

The UAE Ministry of Education said these measures are essential to promote healthy dietary choices among children, enhance their concentration and academic performance, and reduce the risk of long-term illnesses.

Under a list issued by education authorities, the following items are prohibited on school campuses, in canteens, and in students’ lunch boxes: carbonated soft drinks, energy and sugary beverages, chocolates, potato chips and other processed snacks, sweets, cakes, doughnuts and other high-sugar desserts, as well as fried foods such as fries, falafel and samosas.

Restrictions have also been imposed on processed meat, foods high in salt or fat, products containing artificial colours and flavours, and juices with excessive sugar, as part of efforts to tackle childhood obesity, diabetes and other health issues.

School administrations have been instructed to check students’ lunch boxes to ensure that prohibited items are not brought onto campus.

Cafeterias and food outlets within schools have been directed to offer only healthy and balanced options, including fresh fruit, low-fat milk, yoghurt, roasted or baked foods, with water designated as the primary beverage.
