The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has proposed fixed charges of up to Rs1000 in electricity bills for domestic consumers as per the consumption of the unit, said the sources on Friday.

According to the sources, the fixed charges will be effective from the commencement of the new fiscal year, starting from July 1.

The proposal was sent to the government for the final decision. However, the recommendation came after the hike of Rs5.72 in the basic power tariff.

Sources said that the regulatory authority categorised the consumers to impose charges. As per the proposal, consumers who use 301 to 400 units per month would pay Rs200 fixed charges.

Meanwhile, users of 401 to 500 units of electricity per month will pay Rs400 in the account of fixed charges.

For usage of 501 to 600 units, and 601 to 700 units per month, Rs600 and Rs800 would have to pay as fixed charges, respectively. Additionally, consumers would pay Rs1000 fixed charges over usage to 800 units per month.

These proposed fixed charges will be part of the basic tariff, and proposed charges will be included in the electricity bills after the government's decision.

It is pertinent to mention here that fixed charges were not part of the electricity bills of domestic consumers before.
