Milk lovers and haters alike may find themselves either amazed or skeptical to learn that the Pacific beetle cockroach (Diploptera punctata) has been recognised as a valuable source of nutrition, thanks to its milk, which is three times more nutritious than regular dairy.
A 2016 study on the milk of female Pacific beetle cockroaches was published in The Journal of the International Union of Crystallography, revealing fascinating findings about this unconventional nutrient source.
Researchers discovered that the white fluid secreted by these cockroaches is rich in proteins, amino acids, and healthy sugars, all essential for cell growth and repair.

According to the study, buffalo milk, previously considered the most calorie-dense mammalian milk is now surpassed by cockroach milk, which contains three times more calories and nutrients.
While cockroach milk is gaining recognition for its potential health benefits, its availability for human consumption remains a significant challenge due to its low production rate.

However, researchers believe that advancements in food science and technology could eventually make it a viable nutritional alternative.
Despite its impressive nutritional value, scientists emphasise that cockroach milk should complement a balanced diet rather than replace other essential food sources.
