“No shoot during school hours:” Sindh govt introduces new law for child stars

In an effort to protect young actors, the caretaker ministry of culture in Sindh introduced two new legislations: "the Children's Drama Industry Ordinance and the Sindh Actor Royalty Ordinance."

These laws aim to regulate the working conditions and child stars working in Pakistan's film and television industry.

Provincial Culture Minister Junaid Ali Shah said that under the Drama Industry Ordinance, the working hours of children will be determined during drama shooting.

He expressed hope that these regulations will create a conducive environment for young actors to thrive in the industry without compromising their academic career. 

The culture minister further said that the police and the Child Protection Bureau will crack down on any violations of the Children's Drama Industry Ordinance.

The new law prioritises children's education and well-being. The shoot schedules must avoid school hours and late nights, ensuring young actors can balance their passion with proper rest and learning.

The law ensures that anyone who violates the provisions of the law and causes disruption in children’s education by involving them in filming at inappropriate times will be held accountable.

According to the media reports, a dedicated committee will be established to handle grievances arising from contracts between production companies and artists.

Shah maintained that the Sindh Actor Royalty Act will bring comprehensive protection and ensure artists receive royalties from social media, films, dramas, and more. 

Registered artists under the Ministry of Culture will be able to access these royalties through a dedicated committee.
