Several people were killed after a Hiace van caught fire on the Islamabad-Murree Expressway near Khajut on Wednesday, according to the National Highways and Motorway Police (NHMP).
The incident occurred when a fire suddenly erupted inside the passenger vehicle while it was travelling on the busy expressway.
In an official statement, the NHMP confirmed that the blaze resulted in multiple fatalities, although the exact number of victims was not immediately disclosed.
Motorway police officials, rescue teams and members of the district administration rushed to the scene shortly after the incident was reported. Emergency responders launched relief and rescue operations and worked to secure the area as authorities assessed the extent of the damage.
Officials said an investigation has been initiated to determine the cause of the fire. Authorities have not yet indicated whether the blaze was triggered by a mechanical fault, fuel leak or any other factor. Further details are expected following the completion of the initial inquiry.
The tragedy comes at a time when traffic volume on the Islamabad-Murree Expressway has increased due to reconstruction work on Murree Road, which has led to vehicles being diverted to the expressway. Authorities have urged motorists to follow safety guidelines and ensure proper vehicle maintenance during travel.
