In a move towards environmental sustainability and economic efficiency, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed government departments to purchase only electric bikes (e-bikes) for employees.
The initiative is part of the government's priority measures to promote electric vehicles (EVs) in Pakistan.
During a meeting on EV adoption, PM Sharif highlighted the benefits of switching to electric vehicles, including foreign exchange savings on imports and reduced environmental impact.
He instructed relevant authorities to present a comprehensive financial model for EV promotion by November, consulting with the Federal Ministry of Finance and State Bank.
The younger Sharif also directed the completion of the National Electric Vehicles Policy by November, ensuring consultation with all provinces, federal units, and stakeholders.
He also ordered improvements to e-vehicle production licences and regulation.
In an effort to encourage eco-friendly transportation, PM Sharif announced plans to distribute electric bikes among high-performing students in government schools.
He further instructed the Capital Development Authority (CDA) to develop a plan for electric transport in Islamabad.
The comprehensive approach aims to accelerate Pakistan's transition to electric vehicles, reducing reliance on fossil fuels and mitigating environmental pollution.
