Maryam Nawaz, the daughter of PML-N leader Nawaz Sharif, has made her electoral debut from Lahore, becoming the sixth member of the Sharif family to do so.
Maryam is running for NA-119 and a Provincial Assembly seat and she is the second woman of her family contesting elections for the Lower House of Parliament.
She follows in the footsteps of her family members, including Nawaz Sharif, Shehbaz Sharif, Abbas Sharif, and others, who all started their political careers in Lahore.
Previously, Hamza Shehbaz, son of PML-N President Shehbaz Sharif, and Begum Kalsoom Nawaz, Nawaz Sharif's wife, also won their first elections in Lahore. While Hamza had the unique experience of being elected unopposed in 2008.
The Sharif family has a history of electoral success in Lahore, with members consistently winning seats in various elections.
Nawaz Sharif, the head of the family, started his political journey in Lahore in 1985, winning multiple elections in years 1985, 1988, 1990, 1993, 1997, and 2013, including becoming Chief Minister of Punjab.
Shehbaz Sharif continued the family's electoral success, securing victories in elections held in 1988, 1990, 1993, 1997, 2013, and 2018.
Abbas Sharif, another family member, made his electoral debut in 1993, winning a by-poll in Lahore.
Hamza Shehbaz, like his father, has also had successful electoral outings in Lahore.
Maryam Nawaz, now the Vice-President of PML-N, is following in her family's political legacy by contesting in NA-119 and PP-159 in the upcoming 2024 general elections.
Several other relatives connected to the Sharif family, such as Ishaq Dar, Suhail Zia Butt, Omer Suhail Zia Butt, Bilal Yasin, and Mohsin Latif, have also been elected from Lahore over the years, contributing to the family's longstanding presence in the city's political landscape.
