The Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) has inaugurated the first Space Application and Research Center in Gilgit-Baltistan.
According to SUPARCO's spokesperson, Gilgit-Baltistan Chief Minister Gulbar Khan officially opened the country’s first space research facility.
During the ceremony, the CM said the critical role of space technology in regional development efforts and called for closer collaboration with SUPARCO to advance technological growth.
The spokesperson highlighted that the new SUPARCO center in Gilgit aims to address environmental and socio-economic challenges by strengthening satellite-based monitoring systems.
The center will play a key role in monitoring glaciers, providing crucial data on landslides, and collaborating with international research organizations for disaster management and protection.
Its geography makes it susceptible to climate change and natural hazards, necessitating innovative solutions for better understanding the region’s vulnerabilities.
SPARC-GB aims to advance space-based environmental research that addresses these urgent challenges.
The center will function as a research hub, concentrating on crucial areas such as glacier monitoring, climate change mitigation, and disaster management.
It will facilitate cutting-edge studies on glacier dynamics, natural hazards, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable resource management.
