Hyderabad: Intense heatwave in Hyderabad has claimed the life of a police officer, who was discharging his duties.

Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Akhtar Hussain, stationed at Qasimabad Police Station, collapsed while on duty due to the extreme heat.

According to a statement from the police, the officer was immediately transported to the hospital upon losing consciousness, where doctors confirmed his death.

Hospital administration reported that Akhtar Hussain suffered a heart attack caused by the heat, leading to his death.

The deceased officer's body has been handed over to his family. He was a resident of the GOR area in Hyderabad.

In a separate incident in Okara, a worshiper lost his life due to the extreme heat and humidity. Despite rescue teams' efforts to provide medical assistance, the worshiper could not be saved.

Meanwhile, Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has predicted a longer-than-usual monsoon season this year in Karachi from July to August.

Director General PDMA Sindh Salman Shah warned the concerned department, including Commissioner Karachi, KMC, KDA and other organisations, to prepare an emergency plan to deal with the situation.

He added that 198 low-lying areas are likely to experience the negative impacts of heavy rain, out of which 29 are considered as "sensitive”.

Following the forecast, Commissioner Karachi directed the authorities to create a plan to address expected issues in line with heavy rains in the port city.

Pakistan's vulnerability to extreme weather events is growing, with scientists attributing this trend to climate change.
