Karachi’s Urdu Bazaar, once a bustling commercial hub, continues to face severe infrastructure challenges, according to local shopkeepers and residents.

The area suffers from broken sewerage lines and overflowing gutters, with stagnant water flooding the streets, Dialogue Pakistan team found this during its visit to the area under "Karachi Aisa Nahi Tha" initiative.

The situation has persisted for nearly four months, leaving shopkeepers increasingly frustrated and business operations disrupted.

“Despite repeated complaints, the sewer line has not been repaired. Our businesses are suffering,” said one local shopkeeper, highlighting the growing concerns of the community.

Residents and traders alike question the government’s commitment to addressing civic issues, with many asking how citizens are expected to cast their votes when essential services remain neglected.

Parking shortages and muddy, waterlogged streets further exacerbate the difficulties faced by both traders and shoppers.

“After elections, the government seems to disappear. Our complaints remain unheard,” remarked a customer, reflecting widespread dissatisfaction among the public.

Previously, some repairs were carried out only after individuals spent personal funds to address urgent issues, underscoring the lack of systematic governmental intervention, the resident said.

Despite being under the jurisdiction of the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation, the Sindh Government, and the District Municipal Corporation, there appears to be little coordinated effort to tackle the persistent problems.

The public also reported increased health concerns in the area, citing a rise in mosquito-borne illnesses and other health hazards linked to the stagnant water and poor sanitation.

Residents and traders alike call for immediate, sustainable action to restore essential services and improve living and business conditions in Urdu Bazaar.
