The Sindh government has announced that the investigation into the Gul Plaza tragedy will be conducted through a judicial commission.

Speaking at a press conference, Senior Provincial Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon said that precious human lives were lost in the incident. He stated that following the tragedy, the Sindh Cabinet formed a committee to examine the matter.

At the time of the fire, between 2,000 and 2,500 people were present inside the building, while Gul Plaza had undergone safety audits on two occasions.

Sharjeel Memon said that the Director of Civil Defence and the Additional Controller of Civil Defence, District South, have been suspended with immediate effect, and departmental proceedings are being initiated against them under relevant laws.

He added that rescue operations were affected due to delays in the supply of water to fire tenders. As a result, the Chief Engineer (Bulk) and the Hydrants In-Charge have also been suspended, and disciplinary action will be taken against them.

The senior minister further said that the Hydrant In-Charge of the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board has been suspended over delays in water supply.

He reiterated that the Director of Civil Defence, District South, has also been removed from his post.

Sharjeel Memon stressed that the Sindh government would not bow to pressure from any political party.

He said a letter is being written to the Chief Justice of the Sindh High Court, requesting that the inquiry be conducted by a serving judge to ensure a transparent and credible investigation.
