Prominent Palestinian footballer Suleiman Al-Obaid, widely known as the “Pelé of Palestine,” was martyred in an Israeli airstrike in Gaza, the Palestine Football Association (PFA) confirmed.

According to the PFA, the former national team star was waiting for humanitarian aid along with other civilians when he was targeted and killed in the attack.

Al-Obaid, aged 41, had a distinguished football career, scoring over 100 goals and earning widespread admiration among Palestinians for his skill and sportsmanship.

Arab media reported that Al-Obaid was immensely popular and affectionately referred to as “Palestine’s Pelé.” He is survived by his wife and five children.

The death of al-Obeid has sent shockwaves through the sporting community, with tributes pouring in from fans and fellow athletes who described him as a symbol of hope and pride for Palestinians, both on and off the pitch.

Following his martyrdom, the total number of athletes killed since the beginning of Israeli assaults on Gaza in October 2023 has reached 662, according to Arab outlets.

Of these, 321 individuals were associated with football, including players, coaches, referees, club officials, and board members.
