Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has been assassinated after joint airstrikes by the US and Israel.
According to the Iranian state media, Khamenei, aged 86, led the Islamic Republic since 1989, and was assassinated in what Tehran described as a “cowardly attack” while at his workplace in Tehran.
Officials have announced 40 days of national mourning and seven days of public holiday after the tragic news surfaced.
According to the U.S. and Israeli leaders, the strikes were a part of an extensive military campaign against Iranian military and strategic targets.
In a statement, President Trump claimed that the operation was aimed at eliminating Iran’s long-standing leadership threat, in coordination with Israel.
Khamenei’s death marks a dramatic turn in Middle East politics. Under his 36-year rule, Iran became a central actor in regional conflicts and resisted Western pressure over its nuclear program.
Furthermore, his leadership saw repeated internal protests, including major demonstrations in 2022, and ongoing international isolation due to sanctions and diplomatic standoffs.
Meanwhile, Iran’s response to the strikes was swift, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps pledged “severe punishment” for what it called the murder of its leader, and the country launched missile and drone attacks back at Israeli territory and U.S. bases in Gulf states.
The confirmed death of Iran’s supreme leader creates a void in terms of who will be taking power after him, raising fears of further escalation across the region and uncertainty over the future direction of Iran’s government and foreign relations.
